Jian Su is a Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Federal University of Rio Janeiro, Brazil. He received a BS in Engineering Thermophysics from University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, a MS in Engineering Thermophysics from Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and a DSc in Mechanical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro. He was a Research Assistant (1986 to 1987) and then Assistant Researcher (1988) at Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a postdoctoral research associate at Mechanical Engineering Department, Federal University of Rio Janeiro from 1993 to 1994, and a Research Associate at Military Institute of Engineering, Rio de Janeiro, from 1995 to 1997. He has been a faculty member at Nuclear Engineering Department, Federal University of Rio Janeiro since 1998, as assistant professor (1988 to 2007), associate professor (2007 to 2017) and full professor (since 2017). He was Head of Department of Nuclear Engineering, COPPE, Federal University of Rio Janeiro from 2009 to 2013. He was a visiting academic from 2001 to 2002 at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London, hosted by late Prof. Geoff Hewitt, FRS, FRE. He was visit academic for short periods at University of Cambridge (1993,1994,1995), Ocean University China (2003), McMaster University (2001,2004,2008), University of Hong Kong (2004,2005,2006,2007), Peking University (2008, 2013, 2016, 2020), and University of Birmingham (2017). He was Director-Treasurer (2005 to 2009) and Chair of Technical Committee of Nuclear Engineering (2010 to 2019) of Brazilian Society of Mechanical Engineering and Sciences (ABCM). He has been a research fellow of Brazilian National Council of Scientific Research and Development (CNPq) since 2000, a senior research fellow of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) since 2012. His research has been funded by Brazilian federal agencies CNPq and CAPES, and the State of Rio de Janeiro funding agency FAPERJ. He has been a consultant to Brazilian Oil Company (Petrobras) and Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB). He has been the Representative of Federal University of Rio Janeiro at the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2015. His research areas are nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics, multiphase flow, flow assurance, transport phenomena, fluid-structure interaction, and hybrid analytical-numerical methods in engineering.
