Singapore Plays Host to 2014 China University of Petroleum Internship Program
For the past few years, dozens of students from across Asia have vied for a chance to be selected for Platts’ China University of Petroleum (CUP) Internship program. This year more than 20 graduate and undergraduate students competed for the two coveted spots.
And this year, the CUP program saw two firsts: The two-week internship was conducted entirely in Singapore, where in previous years the students split their time between Platts’ Beijing and Singapore offices. In addition, this year marked the first time an international student edged out his local schoolmates at the Beijing-based institution to clinch one of the two intern slots.
In the end, Steven Farfan and Li Zhan emerged as the students who exhibited the strongest writing skills, analytical abilities and command of English, the language in which lectures are conducted. The selection process, which began in March, was spearheaded by Oceana Zhou, analyst team leader, and Cindy Liang, senior analyst.
The internship program – overseen by Sebastian Lewis, editorial director, China – was founded in 2007 by Dave Ernsberger, global editorial director, oil. Now in its sixth session, the CUP internship program gives students from China’s premier energy training academy a first-hand look at the transparency of Platts, its news-gathering and price assessment processes, and its role in the global oil markets. The internship also builds Platts’ profile with China’s young energy professionals.
“As usual, we were very impressed with the quality of candidates who applied for the internship scheme this year,” said Sebastion, of CUP, which in past years has drawn upwards of 50 applicants for the two internships. “I hope that Li and Steven found the experience useful and can apply it in their future studies.”

“Being part of the Platts internship program has helped me to have a better understanding of how the petroleum market works in the real world," he said.
Joining him in Singapore between August 25 and September 5 was his classmate, Li, who hails from China’s Heilongjiang province. Both interns had the opportunity to shadow Daniel Colover, managing editor of Asian crude oil, during the internship’s first week, and Rajesh Nair, managing editor of Asian residual fuels, during the program’s second week. In addition to a deep dive into the global oil markets, the pair also learned about the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector and the Platts Market-On-Close (MOC) price assessment methodologies.
“I have learned a lot about the cash Dubai crude assessments as well as the MOC process. It’s an amazing experience and I hope to have the honor of working at Platts in the future,” said Li, who is also pursuing a master’s degree in applied economics.
