Overview

The College of Geosciences grew out of the Exploration Department of Beijing Petroleum Institute established in 1953, which was the predecessor of the Department of Geosciences of China University of Petroleum-Beijing. In 2001,the Department of Geosciencesevolved to the College of Geosciences.

The college currentlyconsists of Departments of Geology, Departmentof Petroleum Exploration and Development Geology, Research Center of Basin and Reservoir, and the State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and Prospecting. The college has 120 faculty members, including 39 professors and 47 associate professors. The 39 professors include one academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, two chair professors of the Yangtze River Scholar Program, awarded by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and one chief scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program of China.Since1953, the college has cultivated more than 10,000 talents engaged in oil and gas exploration and development. At present, the college has more than 556 undergraduates, 905 postgraduate students, 156 PhD candidates and 20 postdoctoral researchers. The college can currently confer a bachelor’s degree in two majors, master’s degree in six disciplines and doctor’s degree in two disciplines.

With the balanced development of teaching and research, the College of Geosciences aims to build itself into an internationally influential research group and to cultivate more talents specialized in geosciences.
