From October 13 to 18, Zhang Laibin, the President of China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB), led a delegation to visit two WEUN member universities, University of Aberdeen and University of Dundee, and had a talk with Imperial College London and Technical University of Lisbon. The purposes of the visit include consolidating and improving the cooperation, finding new channels and modes of cooperation, exploring more areas of cooperation, discussing various projects within the framework of the WEUN, and inviting qualified universities with intentions to join. During this visit, Zhang Laibin was accompanied by directors of Karamay Campus of CUPB, College of Geophysics, College of Information Science and Engineering, and Institute of Unconventional Oil&Gas Science and Technology.
Zhang Laibin and the delegation met Alan Speight, Vice-President of University of Aberdeen, discussing with the research director of the university and subject directors of geology, petroleum engineering and computer science about the cooperation, and visited the national oil field waste disposal center.
At University of Dundee, Zhang Laibin and the delegation met Dr. Wendy Alexander, Vice-Principle (international), and talked with the directors of the School of Social Sciences, the Center for Energy Policy and Law, the School of Business, and the School of Engineering, and then visited the school's mechanical and computer laboratory.
At Imperial College London, Zhang Laibin and the delegation met the director of the School of Engineering, the academician of the Royal College of Engineering, Nigel Brandon, and the partnership manager, as well as the leaders of petroleum geological engineering, petroleum engineering, geophysics and other majors. At Technical University of Lisbon, Zhang Laibin and the delegation met the president Arlindo Oliveira, the vice president Luis Silveira and the SEEEP coordinator José Santos Victor, and communicated with the leaders of mining and petroleum engineering, geophysics and other projects.
During this visit in University of Aberdeen and University of Dundee, Zhang Laibin and the delegation addressed reports on WEUN’s work carried out and many important plans for next year. As members of WEUN, the two universities expressed their willingness to actively participate in the activities organized by WEUN and contribute to them. They also put forward constructive suggestions on short-term courses, summer schools, academic discussions, cooperative research, etc.
Zhang Laibin and the delegation exchanged views with the students studying at University of Dundee and Technical University of Lisbon. President Zhang inquired about the students' study and life in detail, encouraging the students to study hard and strive to win glory for the alma mater. At the same time, the universities will continue to cooperate and play a bridge role well. In addition, Zhang Laibin and the delegation exchanged ideas with a number of fresh doctoral students interested in coming to CUPB in the near future, introducing the talent-introduction policy and career development prospects of it.
During this visit, CUPB signed the "Cooperation Letter of Intent" and "Memorandum of Cooperation" with University of Aberdeen and Imperial College, which includes the exchanges of the teachers and students majoring in English, machinery, chemical, geology and computer. They will jointly establish the geothermal energy laboratory, boosting students’ training, research, consulting, etc. Two cooperation agreements have been signed with the University of Dundee, covering the joint training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, dual-mentor system for doctoral students, the exchange of teachers and the joint establishment of energy economics, law and policy research centers. The cooperation memorandum has been renewed with Technical University of Lisbon, which includes the joint training of postgraduates and the plans of holding academic conferences, launching summer classes and carrying out research collaborations.
