The U.S. News & World Report released the 2021 Best Global Universities Rankings on 20 October, which involved nearly 1,500 universities in 81 countries and regions around the world. China University of Petroleum ranked 43rd among universities in the Chinese mainland and 538th in the world, ranking up 67 places from last year. With an increasing number of universities on the list, its ranking has climbed by 269 places over the past three years compared with 807th globally in 2018, showing remarkable progress.

For the subject ranking, China University of Petroleum had 13 subjects on the list, 5 of which ranked global top 100. Chemical Engineering ranked 12th in the world with a score of 83.9, and Energy and Fuels ranked 18th with a score of 76.1, both of which entered into the global top 20. In addition, engineering was in the top 7.9% of the world, taking the 20th place out of 118 mainland Chinese universities on the list and the 59th place in the global list, ranking up 15 places from last year.

The U.S. News Rankings do not consider schools' undergraduate or graduate education alone, while it is based on 13 indicatorsmeasuring their overall academic research performance, as well as global and regional reputation.The main indicators and their respective weights are as follows: global research reputation (12.5%), regional research reputation (12.5%), published papers (10%), published books (2.5%), academic conferences (2.5%), Normalized Citation Impact (10%), Total Citations (7.5%), the number of top 10%of mostcited documents (12.5%), the proportion oftop 10% of most cited documents (10%), international cooperation (10%), the number of top 1% of most cited documents in their respective field (5%), as well as the proportion of top 1% of most cited documents in their respective field (5%).
