Physics
In physics subject, the theory and application researches on the physical problems in petroleum industry are carried out. Distinguish features and advantages are gradually formed in six research fields, including condensed matter physics, radio physics, applied acoustics, functional materials, applied optics, atomic nuclear physics and particle physics.
(1) Condensed matter physics (major direction): The main research contents include condensed matter theory, crystal growth and doping modification, molecular design of nonlinear optical crystals, solid surface and interface, metal cluster surface structure, adsorption behavior of the fluid molecules on the surface, micro-structure and physical property of fluid, self-assembly behavior of functional polymer materials, model of dye sensitized solar cell materials, etc.
(2) Radio physics (advantage direction): The main research contents include the mineral physical properties and its application in reservoirs, adsorption and wettability performance on the rock surface, nondestructive testing technology of oil well casing, rock electromagnetic properties and electromagnetic simulation, electromagnetic tomography and electromagnetic exploration, basic research on designing and application of electrical logging instrument, etc.
(3) Applied acoustics (advantage direction): The main research contents include acoustic logging, interaction between acoustic wave and matter, the ultrasonic detection system and the imaging system, phonon crystals, surface acoustic wave, intelligent acoustic materials, fluid dynamic noise and muffling, sound field modeling, etc.
(4) Functional material physics (characteristic direction): Considering the significant demand for optical sensing and optical detection technology in petrochemical industry, new method for preparation of micro-structure controllable photoelectric material is developed, while the oxide functional material of optoelectronic information which has the advantage of ultrafast response is prepared, by the manipulation and regulation in atomic and molecular level. We devote to developing novel photoelectric detector which is suitable for oil and gas well, and establishing independent core technology on aspects such as materials, structures and devices.
(5) Applied optics (characteristic direction): Research is oriented to intelligent well micro nano fiber sensitive and intelligent materials, development of micro nano optical fiber sensor, the key technology to solve the problems of design, manufacturing, packaging, testing and long-term reliability, and carrying out the basic research on the application of terahertz technology in petroleum and petrochemical fields.
(6) Nuclear physics and particle physics (developing direction): The research includes mainly the ray log, neutron log, cosmic ray detection, fields theory, particle simulation and experiment study.
Objectives
The physics subject is to combine the physics theory and the application technology, and cultivate graduate students to become high-level research and innovative talents, who has a firm grasp of basic theories, systematic, specialized knowledge, modern physics experimental technology and the development trend in the discipline, and is capable to undertake scientific research work or independently engage in a special technical work. The objective is to cultivate compound talents with good moral character, physical and mental health, innovation spirit and innovation ability, who is willing to do scientific research in physics, oil and new materials field.

Graduation & Degree Requirement
M.A. thesis and literature review in principle should be completed before the end of the third semester, reference must be the latest progress in the related field in recent years, and the number of the references should be no less than 40, in which paper of JCR1-2 area no less than 10. The mid-term examination is carried out at the end of the fourth semester or at the beginning of the fifth semester.
Master's degree thesis must be completed independently by graduate students under the guidance of instructors, which should show they have a firm grasp of basic theories, systematic and specialized knowledge, and are capable to undertake scientific research work or independently engage in a special technical work. The paper should be of new creative or insight.
Graduate students should actively participate into academic activities, publish the academic papers or patent. Graduate students must publish 1 relevant academic papers in Chinese and English academic publications by the first author (including teacher first, second students). The first author (including teacher first, second students) of various types of patent or application software copyright is equivalent to the academic papers. The above research results must be undersigned China University of Petroleum (Beijing) firstly.
