Materials Science and Engineering
1. Educational Objectives
Master's Degree:About 50 master students are admitted to master's degree authorization first-level discipline every year. They are generally assigned to the research direction of corrosion and protection, high performance metal materials and its application in new energy, new alloys, function and special polymer materials, the material failure analysis and safety evaluation, and the new energy materials. Most of them are mainly engaged in the corrosion course and mechanism of the petroleum pipelines corrosion by the different corrosive gas, such as CO2, H2S, and H2. The other graduate students are taking functional energy materials as their major research. MSE department is also well known for both high level basic research and contemporary engineering development inadvanced semiconductor materials, information functional materials and energy materials. The candidate students to obtain master degree should possess a broad material basis of theoretical knowledge and skills. Good scientific literacy and strong senses of innovation and application awareness were needed. They should also have proficient English ability and strong computer skills.
2. Core Courses
Master's Courses:Electrochemical Principle and Dynamics; Surface Physical and Chemical; Material Discipline Frontier Project; Modern Material Science; Solid-state Phase Transformation; Corrosion Experiment Method and Testing Technology; Modern Material Testing Technology; Material Physics; Computational Materials Science; Analysis Methods In Materials Science.
3. Criteria and Degree Requirements for Graduation (College/ Institute Request for Chinese Students)
For the master candidate students, comprehensive and systematic training of their research process will be undertaken during their study period. The master's study and research plan should reflect that the master step into the cutting-edge areas. Masters’ opening reports should focus on examining the abilities of collecting, organizing and reviewing the related references, capacity of designing and studying. Their master thesis should be evaluated from various aspects including the selection of research topic, research design, logicality, normativity and workload of the dissertation, etc. At least one article that published in some core journal was needed for their master’s degree.
4. Career prospects
With the steadily growing of material industry in China, such as oil refining, oil transportation security, electrical functional materials, novel energy materials, and functional nano-materials, the employment rate of the Ph.D. graduates from our department has always been kept at nearly 100%.On the average, more than 60% of the master degree graduates are enrolled for further study domestically or abroad. And the othergraduates begin their career in universities or high-tech companies which focus on metallic corrosion, petroleum refining or new energy materials, such as SINOPEC, SNPC, etc.
