On September 24th, Shan Honghong, the Chancellor of China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUP), was invited to attend the online conference of Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum 2020 (TNF 2020)’s plenary session: "Human resources challenges of the digital economy: promising areas of education for the fuel and energy complex" initiated by The Industrial University of Tyumen in Russia and delivered a keynote speech. Vladimir Sysoev, deputy governor of Tyumen Region, Russia, Veronika Efremova, Rector of The Industrial University of Tyumen, and Ilya Dementyev, Rector of the Corporate University of Gazprom Neft PAO delivered keynote speeches around the theme of "human resources access of the digital economy". They had a discussion about the new challenges faced by education under the current international situation, the reform of universities with energy characteristics, the application of digital technology services and its role in personnel training, and the staff training in the process of energy industry transformation. Shan Honghong, as the only foreign guest, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Facing Digital Economy: Transformation of Energy Characteristic Universities".
Shan Honghong said that the digital economy was promoting profound changes in higher education, changing the way for teachers and students to teach and learn, and reshaping the current educational concept. As the primary productive force of science and technology, higher education should be a more powerful engine for economic and social development. She pointed out that China University of Petroleum-Beijing had increased its new development momentum through the deep cross-integration of "characteristic disciplines" and "artificial intelligence". She introduced that CUP had improved students' digital literacy by adding new majors such as intelligence science and technology, creating a digital simulation experiment and practice platform, and adding cutting-edge courses such as "machine learning". She presented that CUP had promoted the integration of production, education, research and application, greatly intellectualized the exploitation and production of oil and gas to meet the needs of industrial upgrading, She emphasized that energy universities should promote the organic combination of traditional superior disciplines and new disciplines such as artificial intelligence, expanding new disciplines, improving education and teaching methods, cultivating compound innovative talents urgently-needed in the digital economy era, making the industry and education more integrated, and providing scientific and technological support and intellectual support for the digital transformation and upgrading of industry enterprises. She called on participating universities to seize the opportunity of the digital economy era, build consensus and continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation so as to better shoulder the responsibility and mission of the universities, help build a community with a shared future for mankind, and create a better future for the world.
Shan Honghong's speech won warm applause from the audience and guests. Veronika Efremova said that The Industrial University of Tyumen had just joined the Worldwide Energy University Network this year, and hoped to take this opportunity to continue to strengthen international cooperation and exchanges with CUP, to jointly explore the development prospects of energy education under the new situation.
