The International Academic Forum of China Natural Gas and New Energy
Open discussion forum for the Academicians
On 20th April the college of International Education led a group of six international students to represent China University of Petroleum, Beijing for two days at the international academic forum of China natural gas and new energy forum that was held in Langfang, Hebei province. From an emerging green field through the developing gold field, and even a declining brown field, the forum was held at Langfang international hotel under the theme ‘’Natural gas era and new energy future’’. The forum was organized by Petro China research institute of petroleum exploration and development and Natural gas committee of Chinese petroleum society. Out of 600 applicants, only 400 were selected to attend the forum.
The forum attracted a host of academicians, professors, lecturers, and stake holders from Chinese universities and other countries like Russia, Netherlands, and Germany.
Our students participated in the two day event with enthusiasm and seriousness. The forum was a great learning platform out of which the students a lot of knowledge of Natural gas and new energy technologies. Furthermore, knowledge on the organization of academic forums gave our ISAP students experience on how to better organize school academic forums in the future.
Among the academicians who presented were,
Zhao Zhengzhang(赵政璋) who is the former deputy general manager and party member of the CNPC, and Chairman of the committee.
Zhao Wenzhi who(赵文智,中国勘探开发研究院院长&中国工程院院士) is an academician at Chinese academy of engineering and famous geologist highlighted the stable development needs of natural gas in China through a systematic analysis of the historic transformation of the natural gas in China. He highlighted the gas discoveries in the sulige field and finally called upon all the scholars in the energy sector to share views on technological innovaton.
Ma Xinhua(马新华) who is the general manager and secretary of the party committee of the southwest oil and gas field of CNPC highlighted ives for developing new energy and noted that a green energy will be attained in the near future.
Zhang Yuqing(张玉清) who is the former deputy director of the national energy bureau and member of party committee presented about China energy development outlook and strategy of oil and gas. He noted that from 2020 to 2040, consumption of natural gas will increase. he added that natural gas between 2004 and 2007 reached 15.1 billion cubic meters accounting for an annual growth rate of 14.1% . 238.6 billion Cubic meters in 2017 accounting for a 17% increase in natural gas consumption. Noted that an underground gas storage system is needed. Zhang concluded by putting forward thoughts on china oil and gas industry development including among others, management innovation, technological innovation, institutional innovation, and policy support.
Zhang Da Wei(张大伟) who is the former director of mineral resources reserve evaluation talked about the unconventional natural gas of China with a clear point in mind that reform bears the mission and innovation pilots the future. He categorized the unconventional gas resources in China into; tight gas, shale gas, natural gas in coal methane, natural gas hydrate, and coal bed methane. He further highlighted the problems being incurred which include among others; technology not clearly oriented, and that substantial tight gas reserves become dead reserves. Academician Zhang couldn’t not leave the podium without highlighting the tight gas and shale gas policy considerations in China which range from categories clarification, formulation of standards, outlining blocks, to carrying out key technology researches jointly. ‘’Tao of beach-goers to the first lap not wet hands red flag” said Academician Zhang.
C.C Chan(陈清泉,英国皇家工程院院士&中国工程院院士) who is the founding president of the world electric vehicle association and academician at Chinese academy of Engineering presented about the new energy and new development, innovation driven, and smart energy. His presentation tackled a host of areas including how to prosper in life, basics of life centered on innovation, and talked about the future of EV’s, HEV’s, REV’s in China. Further highlighted the 6I’s in ascending order; inspiration, imagination, innovation, integration, implementation, and investment.
Roman Zhirnov(俄罗斯天然气科学技术研究院) who is the director of oil and gas development, centre of VNIIGAZ of GASPROM, Russia, and expert of oil and gas development and planning highlighted sin his presentation that over the past to present, Russian research institute has been working with CNPC. He noted that Russia is naturally endowed with tremendous amounts of traditional natural gas making it emerge as number one in the world followed by America and the China. Highlighted the problems being faced in the fields including; water breakthrough issues, low strata pressure, existing gas fields are in the late stages of development. The solutions being applied are; liquid replacement, carbon dioxide injection, recycling.
Ulco Vermeulen(IGU战略委员会主席) who is the chairman of the strategy committee of the international gas union and famous natural gas strategy expert highlighted three ways to decarbonize the gas system including among others, biogas or green gas, carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen as the energy carrier and concluded his presentation centered on LNG with a host of comparisons between the Netherlands and China. Xia Wenwu(夏文武,美国Harding Shelton公司高级副总裁) who is the senior vice president harding Shelton petroleum engineering and technology company limited and a well-known shale gas technology expert compared USA unconventional gas production with that of China.
Prior to the closure of the first session of the forum, Academician Yuan Shiyi(袁士义,中国工程院院士) opened a discussion forum with the academicians (Zhang Yuqing, Ulco Vameleun, Ma Xinhua, Xia Wenwu, and Brian horsefield, C.C. Chan, Mao Zongqiang) to discuss about the development of natural gas and development of new energy.
After the forum students also got time to discuss among themselves on the various topics that were presented. Sharing knowledge and understanding of the different technologies from the different fields of natural gas and new energy. It was noted that the final question and answer session that took place after all presentations is a key notable area where the ISAIP will strive to incorporate in future ISAIP academic forums.
The ISAIP and students at large sincerely appreciate the Petro China research institute of petroleum exploration and development and Natural gas committee of Chinese petroleum society for their invitation to the forum.
The forum was successfully closed off at around 12:30 pm Beijing local time.
