The 5th "Oriental Cup" Chinese Calligraphy Competition for Foreigners

A. Activity Background


    From 2017 to 2020, supported by the Special Fund for Promoting Culture and Sports Development in Futian District, Shenzhen Oriental Art Gallery initiated the "Oriental Cup" Foreigners Chinese Calligraphy Competition, and has been undertaking the competition for four consecutive years. The competition had a widespread influence and also played a positive demonstration role, especially in disseminating the excellent traditional Chinese culture and leading foreign friends in China in learning Chinese characters and calligraphy. This competition has been highly praised by people from all walks of life.

C. Participants


Foreigners who work, study or live in China (including Hong Kong, Macao) with valid and legal visas or residence certificates.


D. Collection Time


From May 20th, 2021 to September 20th, 2021


E. Artwork Specifications


a. Works must be created in Chinese characters.

b. The works shall be created on rice paper with writing brush (excluding hard pen and seal cutting).

c. The content of the works should be positive ancient and modern poems, couplets, texts, fu, etc. (the original author and the title of the name of the text should be marked). It is recommended to compose poems and fu by the participant himself or herself, and the content should match the era theme. Those who write ancient poems should use the authoritative version and keep the content coherent and complete. It’s acceptable to have Kai, xing, cao, li, zhuan style etc. (cursive script, seal script content should be attached with interpretation text).

d. Four specifications on size requirements:

Height 68cm x width 68cm

Height 136cm x width 34cm (vertical)

Height 136cm x width 68cm (vertical)

e. Unmounted works are expected.


F.Selection and Treatment


a. Honorary certificate will be issued by the organizing committee.

. One first prize winner, 10,000 yuan bonus;

. Two second prize winners, 5000 yuan each;

. Three third prize winners, 3000 yuan each;

. Twenty excellent award winners, 600 yuan each;

. Three special honorable award winners, presented with trophies;

    All winners will be awarded with certificates of honor.

b. The Organizing Committee will conduct spot-check interviews with some of the authors and exhibitors of outstanding works, and strictly prohibit fraudulent acts of writing on behalf of others. Those who are not their own creators will be disqualified from the exhibition and award-winning qualification.

c. The results of the selection will be published on the WeChat official account of Shenzhen Oriental Art Gallery and relevant websites and newspapers in China.

d. Award-winning and shortlisted works will be exhibited in Shenzhen Oriental Art Gallery in November 2021.
