On June 21, 2019, the Clean Energy Science and Technology Summer School of WEUN opened at China University of Petroleum (Beijing). The theme of this summer school is clean energy science and technology. A total of 19 students from seven countries, including Britain, Denmark, Norway, Brazil, Canada, Russia and China, and 12 experts and scholars in the field of energy research from 11 members universities participated in this summer school. Professors from the University of Michigan, Birmingham University, Danish University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Xiamen University, and China University of Petroleum (Beijing) in the field of world energy provide lectures to these students, while incorporating rich and colorful Chinese cultural experience projects.
Li Gensheng, Vice President of CUPB, Academician Segen Farid Estefen, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Morten Lind, Danish University of Science and Technology, Mark Read, Senior Lecturer, Birmingham University, Secretary-General of WEUN, Sun Xudong, and CUPB The opening ceremony was attended by the heads of functional departments and colleges of the Institute of Education, the College of Mechanical and Storage Engineering, the College of Safety and Marine Engineering, and more than 70 students.
On behalf of CUPB and WEUN, Li Gensheng welcomed foreign experts and students from afar. He introduced the history and characteristics of CUPB’s education, as well as the achievements in international cooperation and exchanges in recent years, especially the exchange between CUPB and member Universities of WEUN since the establishment of WEUN in September 2018. As the first rotating chairing university of WEUN, CUPB has actively promoted the construction of the alliance platform and achieved remarkable results. He wished the WEUN Clean Energy Science and Technology Summer School a great success.
Mohammed Ali from the University of Leeds, UK, spoke as a student representative. He said that he was very excited to be in China for the first time. He could experience the rich and colorful Chinese culture and get close contact with the hospitable Chinese people by attending WEUN International Summer School. He will introduce this experience to his friends and family in the UK and let them know more about China. Professor Morten Lind of the Danish University of Science and Technology spoke on behalf of foreign experts. He thanked WEUN and CUPB for their invitation and the thoughtful service provided by the organizers. He said that WEUN International Summer School provides a platform for young students from different countries to communicate. Despite the differences in culture and language, learning and exchanging around the common theme of clean energy science and technology, as well as learning and feeling Chinese culture, is a very meaningful activity. He hoped the activity will continue and be better.
Sun Xudong made a report on behalf of the Secretariat of WEUN. He summarized the work of WEUN since its establishment in September 2018, described the work plan and deployment for 2019, introduced the situation of the Karamay Campus of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and he welcomed the teachers and students who attended the Summer School to visit the Karamay Campus. Subsequently, Segen F. Estenfen, Morten Lind, Mark Read and Professor Liu Weifeng of CUPB School of Information Science and Engineering made reports on clean energy science and technology.
Wu Xiaolin, Vice President of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), exchanged views with foreign experts and students attending WEUN International Summer School.
The event was co-sponsored by WEUN, the International Office, the College of Machinery and Storage and Transportation Engineering, and the School of Safety and Marine Engineering. Summer school will be set up in Xiamen and Beijing to provide students with different atmosphere of exchange and learning platform.
