Scholarship introduction

In order to promote mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and exchanges in various fields between China and other countries, the Chinese government set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor outstanding international students, teachers, and scholars to study and conduct research in Chinese universities. The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as “CSC”), entrusted by China’s Ministry of Education, is responsible for the admission, enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship recipients.

China University of Petroleum (Beijing) is one of the Chinese universities undertaking the task of training Chinese Government Scholarship awardees. The university is responsible for recruiting excellent international students to study for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees as well as cultivating them into outstanding overseas young scholars. Being part of the national "211 Programme" and the national "Double first-class" Initiative, CUP attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. Under the umbrella of Globalization, CUP has promoted international exchanges and cooperation that have increased its global stature in higher education. Moreover, the university maintains multi-level, multi-disciplinary, multi-channel exchanges and collaboration with 196 universities and companies, including the United States, France, Britain, Canada, Japan, and other developed countries.


Scholarship Programs

1)Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Programs(CSC type A, Awarded by the Chinese Embassy in your country or the relevant Education Ministry in your country)

The Bilateral Program includes all scholarships established by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in accordance with educational exchange agreements or consensus between Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities, or international organizations.

When to Apply

You need to apply between early January and early March. Please consult the dispatching authorities in your country for the specific deadline for each year.

Majors   All majors.(For undergraduate majors, students who only apply for Chinese language courses may apply for this program)

Eligibility

1. The applicant must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be in good health.

2. The applicants must:

   Be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for undergraduate programs.

   Be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for the master’s programs.

   Be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs.

  Be under the age of 45 and have a high school diploma (or higher) when applying for the general scholar programs.

  Be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for the senior scholar programs.

Application Process

1. Submit the application to the overseas student dispatch authorities and obtain the required Recommendations.

2. Apply to China University of Petroleum (Beijing) via the university portal:

   https://cie-registration.cup.edu.cn/.

  If the application materials meet the admission standards of our university, you will get the Pre-Admission Notice. (No application fee is required for CSC class A applications).

3. Submit the application in the CSC system portal: http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina.

   Select Type-A for Bilateral national projects. The agency number of the awarding institution can be obtained by consulting with the dispatching authorities for international students in your country.( Please select China University of Petroleum (Beijing) as your first choice )

4. Submit all the application materials to your home country's dispatching authority within the specified time.


2. University Programs(CSC Type B, Apply through our university, agency number:11414)

1)Chinese Government Scholarship, ‘Silk Road’ Program

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be nationals of countries that are part of the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative.

2. Applicants must be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality from countries along the Silk Roads

3. Bachelor’s applicants should have a minimum Chinese Proficiency of HSK 3(180) to be eligible to apply.

 Master’s and Ph.D. applicants for Chinese taught programs must have at least HSK 4 (180) to be eligible to apply.

 Those with the minimum required Chinese language proficiency but who do not meet language requirements for direct entry into their Majors will partake in a one-year Chinese language course.

 The requirement to go directly into major study without Chinese language study is HSK 4 (222) for Bachelor students and HSK 5 (180) for Chinese taught masters and Ph.D. programs.

4. Masters and Ph.D. applicants for English taught programs must have at least IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, or an official letter from their former university stating English as the teaching language if they had their previous studies conducted in English for at least 2 years.

5. The applicants must:

  Be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for undergraduate programs.

  Be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for the master’s programs.

  Be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs.

Note: The countries and majors that can apply for this program are subject to the application system Settings of our university. If you cannot select this scholarship in the system, it means that it does not qualify for the application scope of the program.


2) Chinese Government Scholarship - High Level Postgraduate Program

Application Requirements:

1. The applicant must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be in good health.

2. Age, Academic background and language requirements:

  Applicants for a master’s degree should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, have excellent academic performance and be under the age of 35.

  Applicants for doctoral programs should hold a master’s degree or equivalent educational level, have excellent academic performance, and be under the age of 40.

 Applicants for master’s or Doctor’s degree programs with Chinese as the professional teaching language must have a Chinese proficiency level of HSK 4.

 For Chinese-taught programs, the language requirement for master’s and Doctor’s degree applicants for direct entry into their major is HSK 5 (180).

  Master’s and doctoral candidates applying for English-taught programs must have at least an IELTS 6.5 score, a TOEFL 80 score, or an official letter from their former university stating English as the teaching language if they had their previous studies conducted in English for at least 2 years.

3) Chinese Government Scholarship - Shanghai Cooperation Organization University Programme

This program is open to applicants from partner universities that also belong to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University. The scholarship supports exchange study at CUP for either a semester or an academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Applicants must be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality and be in good health.

2. Age, Academic background and language requirements:

 Applicants must be a graduate student under the age of 35.

 For Chinese-taught programs, the language requirement is HSK 5 (180).

For English-taught programs applicants must have at least an IELTS 6.5 score, a TOEFL 80 score, or an official letter from their former university stating English as the teaching language if they had their previous studies conducted in English for at least 2 years.

Application Documents

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (in Chinese or English).

2. Copy of Passport Home Page. If the validity of the applicant’s current passport does not meet the requirement (meaning the passport expires before September 2024), please apply for a new passport before submitting the application.

3. Notarized copy of highest diploma or degree certificate. Prospective degree holders must submit official proof of student status from their current school. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

4. Academic transcripts (from undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. They can be in Chinese or English, else must be attached with notarized English translations if they are in foreign languages other than English.

5. Language qualification certificates. Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must submit valid HSK reports in accordance with the corresponding Chinese proficiency requirements. Applicants for English-taught programs shall provide relevant language proficiency certificates like IELTS or TOFEL report (for detailed requirements see program requirements).

6. A study plan proposal. A study plan written in Chinese or English shall contain more than 1,000 characters or words. Please note that the proposal should mainly focus on the description of academic Background, research field, and the future study/research plan; a brief introduction of why you choose to study in China and CUP and your understanding of China and CUP could be also be included in the proposal. The proposal should be signed by the applicant’s Chinese supervisor for doctoral students.

7. Recommendation letters. Two letters of recommendation (written only in Chinese or English) from professors or associate professors shall be submitted. These letters shall describe the applicant’s objectives of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, evaluation of future growth, as well as the cooperation between the supervisors or the exchange between universities both in China and abroad.

8. The Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English (the original copy shall be kept by the applicant). The form is designed by the Chinese quarantine authority and can be obtained from the dispatching authority. The physical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the attending physician's signature , the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.

9. No criminal record Certificate. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of No Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.

10. Fresh graduates currently in China should submit the photocopy of the residence permit page.

11. Other additional documents (e.g. Supervisor’s Recommendation Form for Excellent International Students, award certificates, papers, publications).

Reminder: Uploaded supporting documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use a professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.

Scholarship Benefits

1. Exempt from paying all tuition fees

2. Provide free dormitory. If students choose to live off campus, the university will provide accommodation allowance (700 RMB per month for undergraduates, masters and ordinary students; Doctoral students and advanced scholars: RMB 1000 per month).

3. Living expenses:

Undergraduate students: 2500 RMB/month

Master's students and general scholars: 3000 RMB/month

PhD students and advanced scholars: 3500 RMB/month

4. Comprehensive health insurance premiums:

800 RMB/person/year

RMB 400 / person (study duration less than 6 months)
